If the upstairs of your Pittsburgh home feels like a sauna while the first floor stays decent, that’s not just “old house stuff.” It’s a building physics problem, and the fix usually starts with airflow, return paths, insulation, and how your ducts were laid out, not with a bigger AC.
We see this all the time in Pittsburgh. Two-story homes, finished attics, brick houses with later additions, and remodels that never got the HVAC touched up. The upstairs gets hammered by heat rising, sunlight on the roof, and duct runs that were probably never balanced very well in the first place.
Why the second floor runs hotter
Hot air rises, sure, but that’s only part of the story. The bigger issue is that the upper floor usually takes the heat from the roof, the attic, and the sun before the air conditioner even gets a vote. If the attic is leaky or underinsulated, that heat soaks right into the ceiling below it.
Pittsburgh homes also deal with stack effect. Warm air leaks out at the top of the house, and outside air gets pulled in at lower levels to replace it. That makes the upper floor harder to cool and can create weird pressure differences that mess with comfort from room to room.

You do not need gauges and test instruments to catch obvious issues. A few simple checks can tell you whether the problem is probably airflow, heat gain, or equipment performance.
- Compare the upstairs and downstairs temperatures in the afternoon, not just at night.
- Check whether all supply registers are open and unobstructed.
- Replace a dirty filter if airflow looks weak.
- Feel for air leaking around attic hatches, recessed lights, and top-floor penetrations.
- See whether bedroom doors are closed all day, which can starve rooms of return air.
