Why Your AC Is Leaking Water in a Pittsburgh Home
Water around an air conditioner gets people nervous fast, and for good reason. In a Pittsburgh summer, a little condensation is normal, but water on the floor, stains on the ceiling, or a drip coming from the air handler means something in the drain path is blocked, iced up, or broken.
The tricky part is that the leak is usually a symptom, not the real problem. If you just mop the floor and ignore it, the unit keeps making water, the cabinet keeps rusting, and the ceiling or drywall around it takes the hit.
What the water is supposed to do
An air conditioner removes heat and humidity from the air. That moisture condenses on the evaporator coil, runs into a drain pan, and exits through a condensate line, or a pump if the equipment sits below the drain point.
When everything is set up right, you never think about that water. It disappears quietly, which is exactly how it should work.
Normal condensation vs a real leak
A healthy system can produce a steady amount of condensate on a hot, humid day. That water should stay inside the drain system, not show up on the floor or in the ceiling below an attic unit.

3. The drain pan is cracked, rusted, or out of position
Older pans don’t last forever. Metal pans rust through, plastic pans crack, and a sloppy installation can leave the pan pitched the wrong way so water never reaches the outlet cleanly.

Do not poke around in wiring or try to clear the drain with random chemicals. A clogged drain can often be cleared the right way, but the wrong product can damage the line or the drain components.
Why a leaking AC sometimes points to a bigger problem
A water leak is often the first clue that airflow or refrigerant conditions are off. If a filter is dirty, a return is undersized, or the blower wheel is filthy, the coil can get too cold and ice over.
If the refrigerant charge is wrong, you can get the same result. That’s why the leak matters, but the service call should focus on why the leak happened, not just where the water landed.
